Shanghai Takes Another Step Towards Becoming Wireless City

Shanghai Telecom, China Telecom's local branch, inked an agreement yesterday with Minhang District to construct a wireless Internet network after signing a similar deal with Yangpu District last Tuesday.

The first phase of the wireless network in Minhang District will be finished by the end of this year. It will cover the district government building, the south square of Xinzhuang Station on Metro Line 1 and Zizhu Science-based Industrial Park.

The wireless network will cover almost all key areas within three years in Minhang and offer wide applications for video monitoring, office work and public Internet access.

“Shanghai Telecom will ensure a smooth wireless network at high speeds to serve Shanghai World Expo in 2010,”said Zhang Weihua, general manager of Shanghai Telecom.

Shanghai will complete 3,000 wireless hotspots by this year. Office buildings, small- and medium-sized buildings for business will be the priority.

Shanghai will have established a citywide wireless broadband network by 2010. The city will build trial networks in several districts this year and will explore a new business model for a wireless city. Once completed, it will be the first citywide wireless broadband network on the Chinese mainland.
